Prestigious magazine FourFourTwo published a list with the 100 best footballers in history. A compilation which is giving much to talk about.

The list is topped by Diego Maradona and Gheorge Hagi closes it in 100th place. Between one and the other, there are a few surprises.

Second is Messi, in front of Pele, Cruyff and his modern rival Cristiano Ronaldo. They are the only two players still in the game included in the top ten.

Rather shockingly, Ronaldinho only made the 24th spot, quite possibly because his genius came to an early end. He is the sixth Brazilian behind Pele, Ronaldo, Garrincha, Zico and Romario.

The first keeper on the list is Lev Yashin. The Soviet Union's 'black spider' and the only goalkeeper to have won the Golden Ball awarded to the best footballer of the year.

Yashin is in 22nd place. The next goalkeeper, in 41st position, is Gianluigi Buffon. Former United keeper Peter Schmeichel is 61st, only six places behind Dino Zoff, another legend.

Neymar, at the age of 25, is 97th on the list. Zlatan Ibrahimovic also features, in the 94th spot and just above him, is 93rd Philipp Lahm. Just Fontaine, the top goalscorer ever in a single World Cup with 13 goals, is 78th.

Some notable absentees are Dani Alves or Miroslav Klose. The Brazilian is one of the players with most trophies ever, while Klose has scored more goals than anybody else in the World Cup (16).
